Walk-in closet and rollaway bed in a Rotterdam penthouse

Family Kranenburg

We visited this "hidden" penthouse in Rotterdam's Old North to get a good impression of the property's atmosphere, before getting to work on the family's wishes.

In the home, which was still under renovation at the time, it quickly became clear to us that the family loved natural elements, such as natural stone and a wooden herringbone floor. The clean finished walls, along with the natural elements, created an interplay that already created atmosphere and tranquility throughout the home during the remodel.

After discussing the family's wishes, they gave us the go-ahead.
"Our wishes are clear. Surprise us with a proposal, we are curious".

The family had two different rooms that they wanted to add closet walls. In both rooms, creating storage space was a key requirement.

The walk-in closet

The largest room, which has a free walk-through to the bedroom, was to function as a walk-in closet. In this room, we designed a closet wall that extends to the ceiling to maximize closet storage.

To keep the cabinetry from looking too clinical, our suggestion was to incorporate elements of the wood herringbone floor into all the cabinet doors. We then painted the cabinet doors white to bring out the clean lines in the cabinet. The drawer with glass panel, the large mirror and the ambient lighting make the cabinet fit perfectly with the rest of the room. An elegant and attractive whole where you experience more than enough space. Both in the room and in the cabinets.

The shoe bank

To keep the walk-in closet in good harmony, we actually added contrasting colors to the shoe bench. Throughout the bench, which features three drawers, we recalled a black marble pattern that contrasts with the rest of the space. This gives not only the shoe bench, but also the entire room a playful effect. The seating area is finished with a luxurious dark brown skai leather with buttons, inspired by Chesterfield.

The folding bed

The smallest room in the house presented the biggest challenge. Namely, this room had to function as a guest room, but also have enough closet space.

After some measuring, we came to the conclusion that the space was not big enough for a closet and a guest bed side by side. Therefore, we chose to incorporate the bed into the closet.

To make this happen, we made a closet that you can click the bed into. And best of all, you can't see from the outside that there is an entire double bed hiding in the closet. So it's always a surprise for guests when the family shows them the guest room.

The cabinet is divided into five elements:

  • The oblong cabinet in the corner of the room
  • The fold-out bed at the bottom of the closet
  • The storage spaces at the top of the cabinet
  • The two narrow storage cabinets on the side of the cabinet
  • The black-colored closet wall behind the unfolded bed

We are extremely pleased that we were able to use our own creativity to
express the wishes of the family. With the practical solutions, we also proved that even small spaces can be designed very functionally. All you need is a wish and an idea.
